What is Direct Primary Care?

Direct Primary Care is a membership model that creates a direct relationship between a patient and a primary-care practice.

The short version

Direct Primary Care, often shortened to DPC, is a membership model. A patient pays the primary-care practice a recurring fee for an ongoing care relationship instead of having each primary-care interaction billed through insurance.

The model changes how primary care is organized. It can give the practice more room for continuity, direct communication, longer visits when needed, and care that is less centered on rushing from one billable encounter to the next.

What membership includes at Apotheosis Health

Apotheosis Health membership centers on ongoing primary care and a direct relationship with the practice. Current membership includes:

  • Unlimited primary-care visits
  • In-person visits
  • Telemedicine and video visits
  • Urgent care within the practice’s scope
  • Annual physical
  • Direct secure messaging with the practice
  • In-house blood draws
  • Access to discounted cash-pay laboratory pricing

Where insurance still fits

DPC membership is not comprehensive health insurance. Insurance can still matter for hospital care, emergency care, specialists, advanced imaging, medications, outside laboratory work, and other services beyond the membership.

Many people use DPC for primary care while keeping insurance or another coverage arrangement for larger and unpredictable expenses. The right coverage decision depends on a person's circumstances; Apotheosis Health does not present membership as a replacement for that decision.

Questions to consider

A membership model is easiest to evaluate by looking at the kind of primary-care relationship you want, not by treating it as an eligibility test.

  • Would it be useful to have one practice that knows your history over time?
  • Do you value clearer monthly primary-care pricing?
  • Would direct communication with the practice make care easier to navigate?
  • Are you comfortable maintaining separate coverage for care outside the membership?
